What is Contraception?
Contraception refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy. It allows individuals and couples to plan their families and take control of their fertility. There are many different types of contraception, including hormonal and non-hormonal options, each with varying levels of effectiveness and suitability depending on your health and personal preferences.
At Bamboo Pharmacy, we focus on hormonal contraception, which is one of the most widely used and effective methods available. Our pharmacists provide expert advice on different types of hormonal contraception and help you choose the right option for your needs.
Types of Hormonal Contraception
Hormonal contraception works by regulating hormone levels to prevent ovulation, thicken cervical mucus to block sperm, or thin the lining of the womb to prevent implantation. We offer guidance on the following methods:
1. Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (The Pill)
One of the most commonly used contraceptives, the combined pill contains both oestrogen and progestogen to prevent pregnancy. It is taken daily for 21 days, followed by a 7-day break or a placebo pill, depending on the brand.
Benefits:
- Highly effective when taken correctly
- Can regulate menstrual cycles and reduce period pain
- May improve acne in some individuals
Considerations:
- Not suitable for smokers over 35 or those with certain health conditions
- Must be taken consistently for effectiveness
2. Progestogen-Only Pill (Mini Pill)
The mini pill contains only progestogen and is an alternative for individuals who cannot take oestrogen. It must be taken daily without a break.
Benefits:
- Suitable for breastfeeding mothers
- Can be used by individuals with a history of migraines or high blood pressure
Considerations:
- Must be taken at the same time every day
- May cause irregular bleeding
Alternative Contraception Options
Several long-acting and convenient contraceptive methods offer effective pregnancy prevention without the need for daily management. The contraceptive patch is a small adhesive patch that releases hormones into the bloodstream through the skin. It is worn for three weeks, replaced weekly, and followed by a one-week break. It is easy to use and helps regulate periods, though it may cause skin irritation and is less effective for those over a certain weight.
The contraceptive injection provides long-term protection by releasing progestogen into the body. Administered every 8 to 13 weeks, it is highly effective and eliminates the need to remember a daily pill. However, it may cause irregular periods or stop them altogether and cannot be removed once administered, requiring users to wait for it to wear off.
For even longer-term contraception, the contraceptive implant is a small, flexible rod inserted under the skin in the upper arm. It continuously releases progestogen for up to three years and can be removed at any time if contraception is no longer needed. While it offers hassle-free protection, it may cause changes in menstrual patterns and requires a minor procedure for insertion and removal.
Another long-lasting option is the hormonal intrauterine system (IUS), a small T-shaped device placed inside the womb that releases progestogen. It can last between 3 to 5 years, is highly effective, and may reduce heavy periods. However, it must be fitted by a trained healthcare professional, and some users may experience discomfort during insertion.
Other Reasons for Taking the Contraceptive Pill
In addition to preventing pregnancy, the contraceptive pill offers several other health benefits:
Regulating periods – Helps maintain a more predictable menstrual cycle.
Reducing period pain – Can ease cramps and discomfort.
Managing heavy or irregular bleeding – Helps control excessive or unpredictable periods.
Improving acne – Reduces hormone fluctuations that contribute to breakouts.
Managing polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) – Helps regulate hormone levels and alleviate symptoms.
Treating endometriosis – Can reduce pain and slow the growth of endometrial tissue.
Easing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms – May help with mood swings, bloating, and headaches.
